On May 9, 2025, Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga, inaugurated a major Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Mother Station in Dar es Salaam on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko. The station, which operates 24/7, can serve up to 1,200 vehicles daily and fill eight vehicles at a time. It is the largest of its kind in East Africa and the second largest on the continent. The launch included the unveiling of UDART's first bus powered by natural gas, marking a shift toward cleaner public transportation.
Kapinga praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership for driving energy reforms and highlighted the government’s commitment to reducing fuel costs and environmental impact. She directed TPDC to maintain high service and safety standards and to expand CNG stations nationwide, including in Lindi and Mtwara.
The event also drew support from Parliament, the private sector, and regional leaders, all emphasizing the economic and environmental benefits of CNG. TPDC confirmed plans to build more fixed and mobile CNG stations across key regions, aiming to enhance access for vehicles, industries, institutions, and households. The new station is expected to ease congestion seen at earlier stations like Ubungo Maziwa and reinforce Tanzania’s leadership in sustainable energy development.
