Energy ministers from member states of the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) have agreed to accelerate the implementation of a regional electricity market aimed at expanding cross-border electricity trade, improving energy security and increasing access to reliable power across Eastern Africa. The resolution was adopted during the 22nd EAPP Council of Ministers meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Tanzania was represented by Deputy Minister of Energy Salome Makamba.

The regional electricity market is expected to provide a framework for member states to trade electricity more efficiently through interconnected national power grids. The initiative seeks to improve the reliability of electricity supply, optimize the use of energy resources, strengthen regional cooperation and support economic growth by enabling countries to share available power based on demand and supply.

Speaking after the meeting, Deputy Minister Makamba said the decisions reached by the council would help reduce electricity shortages and outages while improving the operational efficiency and competitiveness of electricity institutions through increased exchange of expertise and technology. She noted that a more reliable electricity supply would support the expansion of industries, attract investment, stimulate production and create employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by member states to deepen regional energy integration as a means of delivering safe, reliable and sustainable electricity services. EAPP officials said stronger regional cooperation will play a key role in enhancing energy security, supporting industrial development and improving electricity access for millions of people across Eastern Africa.
