Egypt and the Italian energy company ENI have announced a significant natural gas discovery off Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, offering potential relief as the country faces mounting energy challenges linked to regional tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The discovery comes at a time when Egypt is working to stabilize its energy supply amid disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict.

The find was made through the drilling of the Denise W exploration well, situated roughly 70 kilometres offshore in the Eastern Mediterranean’s Temsah oil and gas field. According to ENI, early estimates suggest the field may contain around 2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, marking a substantial addition to Egypt’s energy resources.

Egypt’s petroleum ministry confirmed that the discovery also includes approximately 130 million barrels of petroleum condensates. Officials noted that the development aligns with broader government efforts to boost domestic production, counter natural declines in output, and reduce reliance on costly imports, which have strained the national budget.

In recent months, Egypt has faced significant disruptions to its gas imports from Qatar and Israel due to the regional conflict, prompting measures such as fuel price hikes, reduced government spending, and energy-saving policies. While discoveries like Denise W and a recent Western Desert find with Apache Corporation provide hope, Egypt continues to balance meeting domestic demand with its ambitions of becoming a regional energy processing and export hub.
