Construction has begun on the second phase of the state-owned Mafeteng Solar Power Station in Lesotho, a project being developed by a Chinese joint venture. The expansion will add 50 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity to the existing 30 MW facility, increasing the plant's total capacity to 80 MW.
The project will also include a battery energy storage system (BESS) to improve grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy.
Located near Ramarothole in the Mafeteng District, about 70 km south of Maseru, the project forms part of Lesotho's efforts to strengthen its domestic electricity supply. Construction officially commenced in July 2026, with the expansion being implemented under China's development cooperation program.
The upgraded solar plant is expected to generate approximately 95 GWh of electricity annually, helping to reduce Lesotho's dependence on imported power from neighboring South Africa. Combined with the country's existing hydropower resources, the expanded facility is expected to enhance energy security, improve grid reliability, and lower electricity import costs.
The project reflects growing cooperation between Lesotho and China in the renewable energy sector. Beyond increasing clean energy generation, the investment is expected to support the country's long-term sustainability goals by expanding renewable capacity, improving energy resilience, and contributing to economic development through more reliable and affordable electricity.
