The Philippines is emerging as a leading candidate for the world's first commercial geologic hydrogen industry, thanks to what are believed to be the largest natural hydrogen seeps on Earth. If successfully developed, these underground reserves could strengthen the country's energy security while creating major economic opportunities.

Unlike green hydrogen, which is expensive to produce using renewable electricity, geologic hydrogen is naturally stored beneath the Earth's surface and could be extracted at a much lower cost. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates production costs could fall below $1 per kilogram, making it a competitive low-carbon energy source.

Startup Koloma, backed by investors including Bill Gates and Amazon, has identified the Philippines as a prime exploration site. While early tests have been encouraging, further research is needed to confirm the size of the reserves and determine whether commercial production is technically and economically viable.
