Tanzania’s Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) and Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) held a strategic meeting to exchange experiences on regulating oil and natural gas exploration, development, and production. The meeting took place in Dar es Salaam on May 12–13, 2025, and involved experts and senior officials from both countries.

Opening the session, PURA’s Director General, Eng. Charles Sangweni, emphasized the regional significance of this collaboration for both countries and the East African Community as a whole. “This engagement will help, among other things, improve the efficiency of our institutions in regulating upstream petroleum operations,” said Sangweni.

Discussions focused on a wide range of technical areas, including petroleum laws and regulations, data management, and production-sharing agreements. PURA and EPRA shared regulatory experience across critical components of the oil and gas value chain.

The two authorities also addressed licensing processes for exploration and development, as well as community participation in energy projects. This regional cooperation lays a solid foundation for effective governance of the energy sector while prioritizing public interests.
