Tanzania's state-owned Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) plans to connect more than 2,600 additional households to its natural gas network during the current financial year, supporting the government's drive to expand access to clean cooking energy. The initiative forms part of the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy, which seeks to reduce reliance on charcoal and firewood while increasing the use of Tanzania's domestically produced natural gas.

The rollout will include more than 1,000 new household connections in Dar es Salaam across Mikocheni, Sinza, Lugalo and Ubungo, alongside over 800 connections each in Mtwara and Mkuranga. The expansion builds on an existing network that already serves more than 2,500 households in Dar es Salaam, Mtwara and Lindi, reflecting growing demand for cleaner and more affordable cooking fuel.

TPDC says the programme will improve access to reliable energy, reduce indoor air pollution and help curb deforestation by lowering dependence on biomass fuels. The utility is also encouraging homeowners, property developers and businesses within the planned service areas to prepare for connections as it continues investing in gas distribution infrastructure and public awareness campaigns.
